ABET accreditation ensures programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that lead innovation and anticipate public welfare and needs

Elon University’s Bachelor of Engineering program has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board of ABET, the global accreditor for college and university programs in applied and natural sciences, computer science, engineering, and technology. engineering.

ABET accreditation ensures programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that pave the way for innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipate public welfare and safety needs.

“The ABET accreditation of our engineering program marks a significant step forward in Elon’s mission to produce engineers who solve the world’s problems,” said Connie Ledoux Book, president of Elon University. “Thank you to the faculty and staff who have worked tirelessly to build the Engineering Department and achieve this accreditation, and to the administrators, alumni and friends of Elon whose generous investments have created an exciting learning environment. .”

“We are delighted that the quality of our Bachelor of Engineering program has been recognized by ABET accreditation,” said Gabie Smith, Dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences. “Engineering offerings will continue to grow at Elon, building on the strong enrollment trends so far.”

Sought after worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer review process is highly respected as it adds critical value to academic programs in technical disciplines, where quality, accuracy and safety are of the utmost importance. .

Developed by technical professionals from ABET member companies, the ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET credentialing reviews cover curriculum, faculty, facilities and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly qualified professionals from industry, academia and government with expertise in ABET disciplines.

ABET is an ISO 9001:2015 certified non-profit, non-governmental organization. It currently accredits 4,361 programs at 850 colleges and universities in 41 countries and regions.

Elon’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering involves rigorous study and application of engineering principles infused with liberal arts perspectives. Elon’s engineering students graduate with technical prowess, strong communication and collaboration skills, and as global citizens driven by a concern for the common good.

“Achieving ABET accreditation is the next step in advancing our engineering program. We are delighted to offer an accredited degree with a strong liberal arts component, which provides a unique engineering education,” said Scott Wolter, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Engineering.

Elon’s engineering degree program was included in ABET’s 2021-22 accreditation cycle. As part of the accreditation process, faculty and administration conducted intensive self-study and hosted a virtual site visit with an accreditation team in October and November 2021.

“ABET accreditation is an external recognition of the quality of engineering programs. This means that students are held to a common set of rigorous standards so that they are ready to enter the engineering profession upon graduation,” said Associate Professor of Engineering Sirena Hargrove-Leak. , who led the accreditation process. “Our ABET accreditation represents the full realization of an engineering dream of Elon, which began when a committee was formed in August 2013 to explore the feasibility of offering undergraduate engineering degrees at Elon. “

The campus community is invited to a reception to celebrate ABET accreditation and the opening of the first two Innovation Quad buildings hosted by President Book at 4 p.m. on September 12 in Founders Hall.
