Ivey Engineering Awards $ 1,000 Scholarship to University of Michigan-Flint Senior Lydia Powers | New

SAN DIEGO, July 4, 2021 / PRNewswire-PRWeb / – Ivey Engineering, Inc., (IEI), an engineering consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Powers of Lydia of Swartz Creek, Michigan, is the winner of 2021 $ 1,000 scholarship writing competition. Currently senior at the University of Michigan-Flint, Powers is a mechanical engineering major with a minor in Mandarin Chinese.

Originally majoring in architecture, Powers switched majors after realizing that engineering would suit his desired career goals better. “I’ve always loved math and science, but I also want a career where I can apply my passion for languages,” Powers said.

She is currently working as a co-op student in an automotive supplier company, which works with a branch in China. “I would like to continue working for the company and use my degree to design and test auto parts,” Powers explained. “My goal is also to travel China to test and contribute to intercultural communication. “

Powers competed with over 100 other students from United States. Applicants were required to write an 800-1,000 word essay on one of many topics and were judged for their creativity and originality.

Powers’ winning essay covers five types of plumbing jobs homeowners should leave to a professional plumber. One type of job a homeowner shouldn’t attempt, she says, is unclogging sewer backups.

“While many DIY sites suggest using a drain cleaner or even Coca Cola to clean your pipes, they can actually cause more damage by corroding them,” Powers explained in his essay. “In the event of a sewer backup, you should call a professional who has the skills, tools and PPE necessary to handle the situation safely,” she said.

“Lydia wrote a well-organized and impressively-written essay,” said Bill Ivey, vice-president of the IEI. “And you can tell she did the research. Her essay dived deep into some of the plumbing repairs that homeowners should never attempt on their own,” he added.

For Powers, a college education offers more than just a degree. “It gives me the opportunity to learn something that I’m passionate about and that I couldn’t learn on my own otherwise,” she said.

“We are excited to see where Lydia will go with her engineering degree and wish her the best in her career goals,” said Ivey.

Overall, the IEI scholarship program, which started in 2017, awarded $ 9,000 university students of various majors. Any potential or current undergraduate college or university student within United States is able to apply for the scholarship. The next deadline for essay submissions is May 1, 2022.
