Landing Craft Australia (LCA), a joint venture between Navantia Australia and UGL, recently visited Bossong Engineering’s Welshpool facility where pre-production of sections could take place if LCA is successful in its bid to provide future maneuvering capability Australian Army Littoral.
Bossong has extensive experience in manufacturing quenched and tempered steel sheets with relevant welding procedures and methods of working with armored sheets.
Bossong Director Paul Bossong said the company welcomes the opportunity presented by LCA to enter the maritime defense business outside of submarine projects.
“The longevity of the Land 8710 Phase 1 project and the opportunity to partner with LCA is very attractive to Bossong,” Bossong said. “Through our partnership with Landing Craft Australia, we intend to continue to develop our technologies, keeping Australia at the forefront of advanced manufacturing.”
Bossong’s relationship with LCA co-founder UGL spans more than a decade through its support of rail and other complex manufacturing projects.
“Providing opportunities to broaden and deepen the involvement of Australian industry and by integrating innovative Australian companies into the sovereign defense supply chain, creates local manufacturing jobs and develops skills. These are key goals for LCA,” UGL General Manager of Defense Terry Nichols said.
The company’s management systems, use of robots, and 7-day-a-week operations give it the “ability to work innovatively, responsively to precise standards, and to deliver high-volume, high-quality welding production. quality”, according to Navantia.
Navantia Australia chief executive Israel Lozano said the visit to Bossong highlights the huge potential of Australian and Western industry for future projects.

LCA is bidding for Land 8710 Phase 1 – Littoral Maneuver Vessel – Medium to deliver Australian designed and built vessels for the Australian military. Navantia Australia and UGL worked together to successfully deliver LLC upgrades in 2019, winning the 2020 Essington Lewis Award for Minor Support Activity.
