LEONI Engineering Products & Services Vision Group: in-depth expertise in machine vision for automotive manufacturing
Complete system tuning
Taking a software and hardware product agnostic approach enables LEPS engineers to find the best solution for a particular application, said Jim Reed, head of vision products at LEPS.
“LEPS works with many different vendors and will tailor an application need to what we believe are particular strengths, be it color applications, pattern matching, OCR, etc. ” did he declare. “But in cases where customers are working with certain hardware or software companies, we can also work within those guidelines. But in general LEPS takes an agnostic approach to stay flexible.”
In addition, LEPS engineers are 100% dedicated to integrating machine vision. The vision team includes 15 dedicated and experienced engineers – some of whom have over 10 years of industry experience – with a specific focus on machine vision. While the team has expertise in individual aspects of the system such as robots, programmable logic controllers, and cameras, all internal capabilities revolve around the holistic design of the overall machine vision system, Reed said.
“The LEPS vision team doesn’t try to be a jack of all trades. We are real machine vision experts, and that’s what we focus on,” he said.
Advanced automotive expertise
Located near Detroit, the LEPS Vision Group works heavily in the automotive manufacturing arena, in a variety of different applications, including tasks such as porosity inspection and badge inspection. “Our automotive background is extensive, from systems that check for defects on machined parts to systems where robot-mounted cameras inspect 30 to 40 points of interest on an engine,” Reed said.
Recent apps have involved some hot industry topics technologies such as deep learning. In a recent example, the LEPS team designed a new machine vision system that ensures correct assembly of the automotive seat mold. In this application, machine vision cameras, robotics, and deep learning technologies combine to inspect highly variable auto parts that could present challenges for traditional rule-based algorithms. Start to finish problem solving
In addition to its team of experienced engineers, LEPS has an in-house machine vision development lab to solve difficult inspection, assembly and verification problems in automotive manufacturing – and beyond. LEPS Vision Engineers begin each client’s project with a thorough front-end analysis to build a knowledgeable foundation for the vision system design. From there, the team designs, integrates, commissions and supports a custom solution using the best machine vision hardware and software possible for the application.
