MAS uses SAF in collaboration with Neste and PETRONAS


Malaysia Airlines made its maiden flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in partnership with PETRONAS and Neste.
The flight marks Malaysia Airlines’ commitment to make SAF the cleanest and most viable energy option for scheduled flights by 2025.
Historic flight MH7979 using the Airbus 330-200 aircraft took off from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol using an approximately 38% SAF blend of used cooking oil and conventional jet fuel, before arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
This successful operation is the result of the supply agreement between PETCO, which is the marketing and sales arm of PETRONAS in Europe, and Neste, the world’s leading producer of renewable diesel and SAF refined from waste and residues.
In addition to using sustainable aviation fuel, preparations for this flight were made with FlightPulse® and Fuel Insight software from GE Digital which helped the flight crew plan efficient fuel procedures during the flight.
Data recorded during the flight will be processed and analyzed to help the operations team better understand the opportunities for a more sustainable flight.

Neste’s SAF provides immediate emission reductions and is already available today, playing a central role in decarbonizing the aviation industry. We continue to expand our operations and will have the capacity to produce some 1.5 million tonnes of SAF per year by the end of 2023. ”
