Mercer Medicine Harris County Clinic Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)- Mercer Medicine has officially cut the ribbon for its brand new Harris County clinic.
This is the 5th Mercer Medicine clinic to open in Georgia and the first clinic to open in Harris County. Mercer Medicines clinics aim to provide health care to underserved communities in rural Georgia while providing an educational opportunity for Mercer Medicine students.
The Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Jean Sumner, shared the importance of having a clinic like this in a rural area like Harris County.
“If you have to drive 30 or 40 minutes to get to the hospital and you have a serious problem, you don’t often make it,” Dr. Sumner said. “So we have a state-of-the-art clinic with X-rays, the ability to resuscitate, quality doctors.”
She also said that the importance of this clinic serves the community beyond health care.
“I think that means good health care in a community enables economic development,” Dr. Sumner said. “And that translates into improved school performance for children and that saves lives.”
Harris County School District Superintendent Roger Couch said the clinic helps bring students back to the county event after starting their careers.
“That’s one thing that’s going to help us with this medical center. We teach a lot of kids, a lot of great skills and they go somewhere else for school and they move out and it’s almost been a brain drain in our community,” Couch said. “And for that to happen, for doctors who have gone through our program, have gone to school and come back here to this community so they can give back and be a part of it. It’s just a blessing.
Two of the Mercer Medicine students present at the dedication ceremony call Harris County home.
A large crowd attending the dedication ceremony included State Representative Randy Robertson, Hamilton Mayor Julie Brown, Harris County School Superintendent Roger Couch and many others.
The clinic is now open for appointments. You can head to their mercermedicine.com website.
