STS Month Honors UPD-CS City Winners

The University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Science (UPD-CS) 2022 Outstanding Women in Service to the Nation (Cities) winners took center stage at the university’s annual celebration of the month of science, technology and society (STS) in a free online forum entitled “A woman’s place is everywhere”.

As Director of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB), Dr. Pia Bagamasbad has been a key player in the country’s response to the pandemic, while Dr. Aletta Yñiguez of the Institute of Sciences of the Sea (MSI) has continually helped improve the lives of fishermen and improve the country’s fishing industry through its work in marine biology.

Together, Dr. Bagamasbad and Dr. Yñiguez highlight the wide range of impactful and far-reaching contributions of women in all fields of science.

Dr Bagamasbad shared his personal experiences as one of the front lines of the Covid-19 crisis, where his team rose to the challenge of providing testing facilities and training at a time when many things were still unknown about the virus.

“It fills my heart to know that we have helped make medical testing accessible,” she recalls.

Dr Yñiguez spoke of his immersion in the country’s vast coastal ecosystems and the communities that live there, recalling how science helps both improve our understanding of nature and alert us to the dangers that threaten it, while providing the means of its protection. .

“We are blessed with so many rich coastal habitats, but they are threatened by local and global challenges,” she said.

Since 2018, the University of the Philippines has been celebrating STS month every October with the aim of raising awareness about the interstices of science, technology, and society.
