Two other Barcelona stars agree to cut their salaries
Both Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto are said to be on the verge of accepting pay cuts as Barcelona continue to suffer serious financial problems.
It has been well documented in recent months that the Catalan giants have suffered financially with an astonishing debt of € 1.35 billion which has contributed to the departure of the club’s greatest player, Lionel Messi.
Last week it was reported that Gerard Pique chose to cut wages significantly to ease some of Barcelona’s problems and help register new signings Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero.
According to reports, Busquets and Roberto have followed in Pique’s footsteps with Jordi Alba ready to follow suit.
When club president Joan Laporta was discussing the club’s problems earlier this month, he gave insight into what some players might be required to do to improve the situation: “Players have a fixed salary and bonuses for performances and trophies. Some like Pique have agreed to the cuts.
“Others are considering postponing or reducing their premiums. We are looking for solutions to restructure all this, the whole team.
“The team has already cut wages due to COVID. Now we are asking for a second effort, the first response is surprise because no one likes to lower their wages. But given the situation they are starting to understand and we hope we can solve it as soon as possible with the captains and then other players. ”
In Laporta’s shocking press conference last month, he largely blamed former president Josep Maria Bartomeu for the horrific situation the club finds itself in.
After Bartomeu claimed Laporta’s revelations were “full of lies”, the current club president said: “I would remind Bartomeu of all the damage the Neymar deal caused to Barca’s image. 4 open cases with Neymar, we thought it was better for Barça’s interests to settle and avoid more risks. ”
There are other players who are considering taking pay cuts while Barcelona are still looking to sell players in order to generate money.
