Sean Nelson has been selected as the new District Engineer for VDOT Culpeper.

Effective October 10, Nelson will be responsible for the construction, upkeep and maintenance of operations, project development and commercial functions of nearly 10,500 miles of track in the nine counties of Culpeper District: Albemarle , Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock.

The district stretches from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the east to the Commonwealth capital, Richmond.

“I am honored to return to the Culpeper District as a District Engineer and look forward to working with our talented teams and valued community partners,” said Nelson. “I was born and raised in Louisa and am now raising my family there. I am proud to come home and I am committed to making a difference in this region.

Most recently, Nelson served as Richmond District Maintenance Engineer, responsible for the maintenance program and emergency operations on over 18,000 miles of track. Sean has over 16 years of progressive engineering experience within VDOT.

“Sean is a collaborative leader, a comprehensive technical expert and a committed community partner,” said Chief Deputy Commissioner Rob Cary. “The nine counties and the unique transportation needs of Culpeper District will thrive under Nelson’s leadership.”

Nelson has a diverse experience in positions within VDOT, which he joined in 2005. He most recently served as Assistant District Engineer for Maintenance and Operations in the Hampton Roads District. Prior to his tenure in the Richmond District, he was Assistant Resident Engineer and Resident Engineer in the Fredericksburg Residence and Pavement Manager for the Fredericksburg District. He was Senior Pavement Engineer in the VDOT Central Office and District Pavement Engineer and Regional Laboratory Director in Culpeper District. Nelson is also a graduate of the VDOT Core Development Program.

Nelson holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology from Old Dominion University and is a Chartered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
